The oriental cockroach is the darkest of the four species present in the United States, with a glossy dark brown or black appearance. Female oriental cockroaches generate up to eight egg cases, with 16 eggs per case in fewer than 180 days. The nymphs hatch sixty days later and mature six to twelve months afterward. Nymphs are pale, tan-colored, and active from March to July, molting seven to ten times before reaching maturity in the fall.

Oriental cockroaches live for six to twelve months after maturing into adults, with females generating an average of 200 eggs throughout their lives.
